Search merchandising

Search merchandising is the manual curation of what appears for specific queries — pinned results, banners, redirects and campaign-driven ordering.

It exists because some queries are too commercially important to leave to a scoring function. Brand terms, campaign terms and head queries usually justify a hand-built answer.

The cost is maintenance. Merchandising rules accumulate, silently conflict, and go stale when the products behind them sell out — which is why teams that merchandise heavily need rule expiry and periodic audits more than they need more rules.
